Comparison

Khatabook vs OkCredit vs MobiKhata: Which Khata App Fits You?

Khatabook and OkCredit are the best-known khata apps, and both are excellent in India. Here is how they compare with MobiKhata, and which one makes sense where you do business.

Quick answer

Khatabook and OkCredit are built for India: Indian languages, the Indian rupee and UPI payments. MobiKhata is built for shops in Pakistan, Afghanistan and beyond: it supports Urdu, Pashto and Dari among 8 languages, lets each business use its own currency, and is free on Android, iPhone and the web. If you trade in India and want UPI collection, choose Khatabook or OkCredit. If you trade in Pakistan or Afghanistan, or in more than one currency, MobiKhata is the better fit.

Key takeaways

  • All three apps record udhaar, keep balances and back up your data. The differences are language, currency and payments.
  • Khatabook lists English and 12 more languages and OkCredit lists 11, mostly Indian languages. Neither lists Urdu, Pashto or Dari.
  • OkCredit has a free Basic plan and paid Premium plans. Khatabook and MobiKhata are free to download.
  • MobiKhata does not collect payments or offer loans. It focuses on a clear, multi-currency ledger.

Khatabook: strengths and limits

Khatabook is one of the most widely used khata apps in India. Its App Store listing describes it as “proudly made in India” and highlights free SMS updates to customers on every transaction, automatic online backup, and access to business loans from Indian lending partners. It lists English and 12 more languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

For a shop in India, that is a strong package. For a shop in Pakistan or Afghanistan, the gaps are clear: there is no Urdu, Pashto or Dari in the listed languages, and the loan and payment features depend on Indian banking. Our guide to Khatabook alternatives in Pakistan looks at the options in more depth.

OkCredit: strengths and limits

OkCredit focuses tightly on the khata itself. Its website lists 11 languages, says the app works without an internet connection, and offers a free Basic plan with unlimited customers, unlimited entries, reminders and online backup. Paid Premium plans add ad-free use, multi-device access, GST billing, unlimited SMS reminders and priority support. Reminders include UPI payment links that customers can pay through apps such as GPay, PhonePe or Paytm.

Those UPI links are OkCredit’s biggest advantage in India, and the reason it is less useful elsewhere: UPI is an Indian payment system, and the language list does not include Urdu, Pashto or Dari.

MobiKhata: strengths and limits

MobiKhata was built for the way small businesses work in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is free on Android and iPhone, with a web app for your computer. Its main strengths:

  • Languages: Urdu, Pashto, Dari, Arabic, English, Hindi, Bengali and Spanish, with right-to-left scripts.
  • Currencies: each business has its own currency, so you can keep PKR, AFN and USD ledgers side by side.
  • Several businesses: separate ledgers for each shop or branch, switched in one tap.
  • Offline first: entries are saved on the phone and sync when you are online.
  • Statements and reports: PDF statements you can share on WhatsApp or SMS, and reports with Summary, Trends and By Party views.
  • Privacy: an optional fingerprint or Face ID lock, a recycle bin for deleted entries, and account deletion from Settings.

To be fair about the limits: MobiKhata does not collect payments, offer loans, manage stock or create GST invoices. Scheduled reminder notifications are available on Android; on iPhone you send reminders by sharing a statement. If you need inventory and billing, an app with a stock book, such as DigiKhata, may suit you better.

What all three apps have in common

Before looking at differences, it is worth knowing what you get from any of these apps. All three let you add customers, record credit and payments, see each customer’s balance, and back up your records online so a lost phone does not mean a lost khata. All three are free to start, and all three are available on Android and iPhone. If you only need a simple digital khata and you work in India, any of them will serve you well.

Five questions to ask before you choose

  1. Can everyone in my shop read it? Check that your language, and your staff’s language, is in the app.
  2. Does it use my currency? If you deal in more than one, check that each ledger can have its own currency.
  3. Will it work in my shop? If the internet is weak during the day, you need an app that saves entries offline.
  4. How will my customers see their balance? A statement your customer can open on WhatsApp saves a lot of arguments.
  5. What will it cost later? Check which features are free and which need a paid plan, so you are not surprised when your shop grows.

How to switch from Khatabook or OkCredit to MobiKhata

  1. Export or note your balances. Before you switch, download a statement or report from your current app, or write down each customer’s balance.
  2. Install MobiKhata from Google Play or the App Store and sign in with Google, Apple or email.
  3. Create your business and choose its currency.
  4. Add your customers. You can pick them from your phone’s contacts if you allow access.
  5. Enter one opening balance per customer as a single Cash Out entry (they owe you) or Cash In entry (you owe them), with a note such as “Balance from previous app”.
  6. Keep the old export for your records, then record all new entries in MobiKhata.

The same method works for a paper khata. Our mobile khata guide walks through it, and the khata book format article explains how the columns map to Cash In and Cash Out. If you are coming from CashBook instead, see our CashBook alternative guide.
